A historic building within the North Loop neighborhood will soon be transformed into apartments.
Solhem Companies is planning to repurpose a historic building located along 1st Street N next to the Star Tribune Printing Plant. The building will be renovated to include residential units and office space with the office space being home to Solhem Companies.
The building itself was constructed in 1886 and is part of the historic Itasca complex. The last time the building received a renovation was in 1989 when it was converted into office space. In total, the building covers eight floors of space, that includes six stories above ground, a basement and sub-basement.
When the renovations are complete the building will feature 49 market-rate apartments that will range in size and include one, two and three-bedroom layouts along with basement-level garden units. Residents of the building will have access to a lobby/lounge, mail area, package area, fitness center and storage spaces.
This historic building is of heavy-timber construction and features full-height exterior brick bearing walls and a Platteville limestone foundation. BKV Group is responsible for the design of the transformation of the building which will maintain its historic façade but feature a reconfiguration of the interior that will also include the creation of basement lightwells and outdoor patios. In addition, at the northside of the building an additional accessible parking stall will be added along with bike parking and landscaping.
Work on 724 1ST Street N is anticipated to begin this spring and be complete in the fall.
