Fond-Du-Luth Casino plans major renovations

Say goodbye to the neon and hello to LEDs. Fond-Du-Luth Casino is about to receive a major cosmetic face lift come this summer when construction begins on an exterior and interior renovation that will truly bring the casino into the 21st century.

Details regarding the $5.5 million renovation at 129 East Superior Street were finally made public today by the Duluth News Tribune. The renovation itself has been planned for quite sometime and will dramatically alter what Duluthians and tourists alike have grown to recognize Fond-Du-Luth as.

Specific plans include ridding the exterior of the art deco architectural vibe that is currently present while also renovating the interior first and second floor. Visitors no longer will be able to smoke on the first floor when the renovation is complete, something that casino officials say that regulars have been requesting for quite some time now.

The exterior renovation will feature the addition LED lights along with digital screens. The overall feel will be much more modern and something that the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa believes will fit in nicely with the surrounding redevelopment occurring at this end of Downtown.

The band hopes to one day be able to secure the ability to expand the amount of sovereign land it holds within downtown to include that of the Carter Hotel Building behind the casino. Plans for that site have not been 100% solidified but the idea for future expansion to the casino and even possibly the addition of a hotel to the site have been floated.

Renovations will begin this summer with both the exterior and interior likely to be finished by mid fall.
