A considerable amount of progress has been made on the City of Minneapolis’ new Public Service Building.
Located at 505 4th Avenue S, the 11-story, 380,000 square foot building will include office and public service space once complete later this year. The new building will allow the city to co-locate 1,500 City of Minneapolis employees who are currently spread throughout six different locations in Downtown Minneapolis.
The project, which began construction in June 2018, is anticipated to be complete and ready for City employees later this fall.
The new Minneapolis Public Service Building was designed by MSR (Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle) in partnership with Henning Larsen. The building features a modern design with the exterior being clad in an anodized aluminum metal panel system and a significant amount of glazing. The metal paneling system is unique as it optimizes interior light and climate conditions while also creating a visually stimulating façade design. The first two floors of the building will be clad entirely in glazing which will maximize the building’s connection to the public realm. On the upper floors of the building there will be a number of outdoor spaces including four recessed exterior patio spaces that will be available to office users within the building.
The new public service building will be connected to the Minneapolis Skyway System. The skyway will travel around the exterior façade on the second floor of the building connecting it to the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility and the Hennepin County Government Center. The existing skyway connection to the Hennepin County parking ramp will also remain.
1.5% of the total project budget was dedicated to public art that will be integrated within the publicly accessible areas of the building.
The unique public art collection will feature work by a number of notable artists. In total, the city received 163 applications from artists looking to contribute art to the building, in the end 16 artists were chosen to create 16 different works. Here’s some of the art that’s currently planned to be featured within the building.
Molly Reichert and Adam Marcus have designed bird safe glass art designs for windows on behalf of Futures North.
Tristan Al-Haddad has created a ceiling suspended sculpture that will be located in the lobby of the building.
Five mural projects on glass that will reflect life in Minneapolis have been created by Angela Two Stars, Connor Rice, Kao Lee Thao, Marlena Myles, and Witt Siasoco.
Seven unique elevator lobby ceilings have been created by Aaron Marx, Alexander Tylevich, Andrew Lucia/Iroha Ito, Chistopher Harrison, James Brenner, Laurie Borggreve, and Rory Wakemup.

We’ll continue to monitor the construction progress of the City of Minneapolis’s new Public Service Building as it continues to edge closer to completion. As always, you can expect more photos from us over the next few months and this exciting project.
