A local developer is planning an entirely affordable apartment building practically on the shores of the Mississippi River within the Hawthorne neighborhood in North Minneapolis.
Schafer Richardson is working on a plan to redevelop 2025 West River Road N, a site that is currently home to Broadway Pizza. Plans for the site include a six-story, 160-unit residential building in which all units would be designated as affordable housing. The building would also house 163 parking stalls. 80 of those stalls would be located underground and another 83 being would be located on a surface parking lot behind the building.
Designed by Urbanworks Architecture, the building would feature a large lobby, expansive windows along with balconies off of select units. Amenities would include a rain garden, play area, pet run, courtyard and bike amenity space. Units within the project are expected to range in size from studio/alcove to two-bedroom units.
2025 West River Road isnβt the only affordable housing project that Schafer Richardson has in the works within the area. Right now, work is underway on βThe Redwellβ, a six-story, mixed-use building that is currently under construction at 1000 3rd Street N within the North Loop. When complete the building will include 109 affordable apartment units and 10,200 square feet of ground floor retail space.
Plans for the 2025 West River Road will go before the Minneapolis Planning Commission Committee of the Whole for feedback, tomorrow, February 13th, at 4:30pm. The project is expected to go before the Minneapolis Planning Commission for approval later this spring.
