The Radisson hotel in Downtown Duluth will debut a spruced up and refreshed look next spring when a $4 million dollar renovation is completed. The renovation itself is expected to bring the hotel up an additional star making it the only four star hotel in the city of Duluth.
Built in 1969, the 16 story Radisson hotel is one of the most iconic buildings in the Duluth skyline not only due to its height but also is cylinder style design. Located at 505 West Superior Street the hotel is situated directly next to the site where maurices will open their new headquarters next year.
Plans for the renovation include a new hotel rooms and hallways. The banquet spaces will also be renovated with new carpet and wall coverings. There are hopes that the renovations can also include the addition of a hotel lobby bar. The pool will also be resurfaced along with the parking lot and sidewalks.
The renovation of the all 268 hotel rooms (200 in the tower, 68 in the annex) will be a head to toe, or rather ceiling to floor, style of renovation. This means that essentially no area will be left untouched.
The renovated rooms will feature new carpeting, wall coverings, furniture, lights, appliances and entirely new bathrooms. The overall feel of the hotel rooms will be something different than what are found in most Radisson hotels as it was designed specifically for Duluth's.
The new hotel rooms will feature a color scheme of white, grey, and black. The overall feel will be very modern and high end. Marble floors will be included in the bathroom with italian tile and quartz vanity tops.
SUPERIOR STREET RETAIL
The Radisson hotel encompasses an entire city block with much of that fronting Superior Street. Plans for the renovation also include the street level Bowery Bros. Pub. The owners of the Radisson hope to turn that space into a coffeehouse.
Right now it's unclear as to what specific coffeehouse would open a location there. Discussions with have a few different chains have occurred. We can tell you right now that you can pretty much rule out Starbucks as they have a location a block away.
Likely candidates for the space if it does in fact become a coffeehouse would be Caribou Coffee, Dunn Brothers, or even possibly a Dunkin' Donuts. However right now it's all just speculation.
Work has already begun on the renovation of the guest rooms and will soon begin in other areas of the hotel. If all goes according to plan it should be completed this coming summer (in time for Grandma's Marathon of course).
