A mixed-use building that was destroyed during the riots in response to George Floyd’s murder will soon be replaced.

Plans were recently approved for a three-story, mixed-use building to be constructed at 2815 E Lake Street in the Longfellow neighborhood. Designed by Collage Architects, the new building will include 2,400 square feet of ground floor commercial space, 8 market-rate apartments and seven parking spaces.

The ground floor will be home to two retail spaces and one residential unit while the upper floors will be home to seven residential units. Units will range in size and will include one and two-bedroom layouts. Seven parking spaces will be located on a surface parking lot at the rear of the building. The parking area will be accessed via an existing alleyway allowing for an existing curb cut along E Lake Street to be eliminated.

The building will take up the full width of the lot fronting Lake Street, replacing both the footprint of the previous building and the footprint of an adjacent parking lot. The exterior of the building will be clad in a mix of brick, metal and cement board siding and will feature multiple balconies on the upper floors.

Work on 2815 E Lake Street is anticipated to begin this spring.
