Plans are in the works to restore two historic Warehouse District buildings.
Located at the intersection of 1st Avenue N and 4th Street N, Hayden B Investments is planning to restore the Brill Building. The building is historically known as two separate buildings and includes the J.H. Martin & Company Building and the Stearn Building.
So, hereβs a little history on the two buildings in case youβre wondering. The three-story J.H. Martin & Company Building was constructed in 1902 while the two-story Stearn Building was constructed in 1904. In the early 1950βs the two buildings were connected internally and at that time the structures were renamed as the Brill Building.
The proposed work for the two-building structure includes exterior rehabilitation work along with interior work. When renovations are complete, both buildings will be continued to be used as multi-tenant commercial space.
The exterior work will include repairing historic brick and stone masonry, the replacement of non-historic windows and repair of historic windows, replacement of the buildingβs metal cornice, a partial roof replacement and other minor alterations. In addition, the project will repair the storefront and primary entrance of the Martin Building along with the historic storefront and entrances of the Stearn Building. That work will also include the replacement of non-historic exterior lighting and the addition of new signage on the exterior of the buildings.
Plans for 20 4th Street N went before the Minneapolis Heritage Planning Commission earlier this month. Work is anticipated to begin on the project later this year and a completion is planned for the end of 2022.
