THE WEST HOTEL TO OPEN IN NORTH LOOP NEXT SUMMER
A new hospitality project in the North Loop that has been in the works for nearly five years has finally identified its hotel component.
The West Hotel will open next summer as a part of the Commutator Foundry Project which is currently under construction at the corner of 2nd Avenue N and 1st Street N. The new hotel will be operated by Salt Hotels, a boutique hospitality company with hotels located in Los Angeles, Miami, Nantucket, and the Hudson Valley.
The new boutique hotel will include 123 luxury guest rooms along with six event spaces, a restaurant by award-winning Chef Tim McKee, a stone cellar cocktail bar, a rooftop terrace, and an outdoor dining patio. In addition, the building will also house several leased retail spaces and indoor parking.
Chef McKee’s new signature restaurant will focus on Basque-inspired cuisine from Northern Spain, in particular the areas of San Sebastián, Bilbao, and Pamplona. The restaurant will cook most dishes over charcoal and will also include an extensive beverage program that will feature a vast vermouth program along with a large gin and tonic program. Chef McKee will also open a Mediterranean-inspired bakery within the building in addition to overseeing the culinary program for the event spaces within the hotel and the in-room dining program.
The plans for the Commutator Foundry Project include the reuse of two historic building while constructing two new buildings in between them with the new buildings largely being occupied by the hotel. The exterior of the project has been designed by local architectural-firm Snow Kreilich Architects while the interior design work is being completed by world-renowned research and design office, Neri&Hu.
The Commutator Foundry Project has been in the works since 2018. The project has gone through a few design iterations over the years, at one point the project was exploring shifting from including a hotel to apartments, however the original plans were selected as the final design. Construction on the project began last year and is anticipated to wrap in summer 2023.
